Innovan: (Almost) Impossibly Compact Mobile Campers

Aerodynamic and contemporary but still reflecting traditional modern camper style, these sleek little wonders from Innovan are neat to look at but much more amazing when deployed.

A pop-up top nearly doubles interior space when the unit is stopped, while a flip-up back provides shelter for camping out. Its creators boast that such transformations take only 30 seconds.

Various add-ons and extensions are possible, including a secondary unit towed behind the first – some pieces can be popped right on the back of a truck, while others are made to be hauled in back.

Lofted Below: Rolling Roof Landscape Grounds Green Home

Sandwiched between earth and sky, this home manages to be both lift off from the site but also feel almost subterranean at the same time.

Designed by Supersudaka for a remote region in Chile, the design bends around the demands of code, ecology and earthquakes while managing to capture a 360-degree view of the surrounding valley.

Cross-ventilation and sun protection are considered, but just part of what pushed the strange topography of both the floors and ceilings of the house, which had to deform around all kinds of unique site-specific considerations.

The blend of influences goes beyond the structural and contextual to the formal as well. As ArchDaily puts it, the result is “A mix, a bastardized design, a fusion, like a crossbreed dog, as named in Chilean: A Kiltro (mixed-breed dog).”

Folding Paper Chair Assembled from Slit & Slotted Sheets

Trusses, arches and other traditional building forms gain strength in part from materials, but largely from shape – a fact that drives the design of this otherwise-fragile-looking set of seats.

Designed by Koji Sekita (via DesignBoom), these objects are “composed of paper sheets, the cardstock is scored and folded in a zigzag pattern. Each identical piece is then joined, creating the form of a chair. The strength of the seating object comes from the honeycomb pattern generated from the assembling the individual parts. due to the flexible nature of the construction, any length of chair or bench can be produced.”

The process is surprisingly simple, and the repetitive effect mesmerizing, but don’t be so dazzled you drop your drink – that part of the equation has yet to be fully resolved.
