One-Room London Flat Morphs Into Stylish 2-Level Home

Before Hogarth Architects could renovate and transform this stunning South Kensington, London apartment, they had to rewind the space back to an earlier version. A false ceiling and add-on room partition had to be removed to open up the living area and reveal its original grand scale.

Due to the building being listed as historical, the cornices and fireplace surrounds could not be altered. But that small restriction would not stop an incredible transformation from taking place.

After the flat was restored to one large room, the architects added a massive two-level timber structure. The new piece contains the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and a small mezzanine overlooking the main living space.

This huge piece of furniture, according to the architects, contains all of the functions that a “man about town” might need. It also just happens to be incredibly stylish and surprisingly modern. The combination of rustic wood with modern frosted glass makes for a very metropolitan look.

Whether for a single person or a family, adding a large, bold object like this in the middle of a living space is a creative way to effectively double the floorspace of a living area…provided that you have sufficiently high ceilings, of course.

Funky Apostle Place Settings Make for a Perfect Last Supper

The Leonardo da Vinci painting The Last Supper is one of those instantly recognizable works of art, but unless you have studied art you may not know that there is a great deal of symbolism in the way that the figures are all positioned. Bella Maneira is a series of table textiles that explores that symbolism.

In sets of 13 place mats or three table runners, the series depicts the 13 apostles of the Bible by showing only their hands.

The positions of the hands hold the key to their owners’ identities. Some carry objects or wear adornments, and these too give clues as to which apostle they represent.

Luckily for those of us not versed in art history and Christian lore, there is a legend which identifies each pair of hands (click to enlarge). The legend also lists how each apostle appeared in the Leonardo painting for those eager to look for the similarities.

The inventive and playful textile series is the work of French designers Mr. & Mr., who offer them for sale in their online shop.
